MICRODERMABRASION

1.What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion leaves your skin feeling smooth, clean and rejuvenated. It is beneficial for a wide variety of skin types, and can:
•Improve dull or uneven skin color
•Relieve clogged pores and blackheads
•Soften general roughness or thickened patches of dead skin such as elbows, and upper arms
•Refine the appearance of fine lines and large pores
2. How does it work?
Microdermabrasion directs a precise stream of very fine crystals onto the skin, loosening the layer of dead skin cells that forms on the surface. At the same time, the exfoliated skin cells and excess crystal powder are vacuumed away to reveal fresh invigorated skin. Typically, only the uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is removed, resulting in minimal discomfort and virtually no recuperation. In select cases, however, a more aggressive abrasion may be chosen, and appropriate aftercare will be discussed.
3. Does it hurt?
Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates the skin but is not painful and does not require pre-treatment or topical anesthesia.
4. How often can you have it done?
Although there are immediate benefits after one treatment, for best results we recommend a series of 5-6 treatments spaced two to three weeks apart. This protocol may vary when treating different conditions, such as acne scarring and skin discoloration.
5. Are there any side effects?
The suctioning action may impart tautness and a slight redness to the skin, but this will subside within a few hours. Although uncommon, some patients may experience streaking of the skin from increased blood flow, which will fade gradually over a day or two. Overall, results can be achieved with little to no downtime.
The dermatologists at Contemporary & Cosmetic Dermatology, PC are available to go over these and any other questions you may have regarding microdermabrasion.
